Console tables originated in 17th-century France as fixed wall tables supported by brackets or legs, designed to align with architectural panelling. During the 18th century, particularly in the Louis XV and Rococo eras, they evolved into highly sculpted, giltwood features displaying intricate asymmetrical carvings and imported marble tops.

These tables were typically hand-carved from softwoods such as lindenwood or pine, coated with gesso, and finished using water gilding with gold leaf. The tabletops were topped with carved, fitted slabs of indigenous or imported variegated marble.

Authentic pieces feature hand-carved joinery, visible wood grain texture beneath the gesso, and natural wear patterns on the gold leaf where red or grey bole clay shows through. The underside of the wooden framework and the underside of the marble slab usually reveal period hand-tool marks rather than modern machine cuts.

A pair of carved console tables can be arranged symmetrically on either side of a grand doorway, fireplace, or central artwork to frame a space. Their reflective gold-leaf finish complements neutral contemporary plaster work and minimalist architectural elements.

Giltwood surfaces should only be dusted gently with a soft, dry camel-hair brush, as water or cleaning chemicals will dissolve the gesso and ruin gold leaf. Marble tops should be wiped clean with a damp, neutral pH cloth and sealed periodically to prevent staining from liquids.
