Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Named after Captain Davenport who commissioned the original design, a Davenport desk is a compact writing desk featuring a sloped writing surface, internal storage compartments, and side drawers. Popularised in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, these pieces provided an efficient workspace solution within drawing rooms or studies.

Davenport desks from the Regency and Victorian eras were predominantly crafted from dense hardwoods such as flame mahogany, rosewood, or walnut, often featuring gilt-tooled leather writing surfaces. Secondary timbers inside drawers typically included pine, oak, or cedar, accented with brass hardware and castors.

Authentic Regency examples dating from around 1800 to 1830 display classical proportions, reeded or scrolled carved supports, hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, and original brass fittings. Look for hand-planed secondary woods, natural wear along the drawer runners, and genuine leather insets showing period-appropriate patina.

Due to its compact footprint, a Davenport desk functions well as a decorative writing station in an entryway, drawing room alcove, or bedroom nook. Pair the rich mahogany timber with contemporary artwork or a sleek modern desk lamp to create a balanced contrast between traditional craftsmanship and modern design.

Keep the desk away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent wood warping and leather fading. Maintain the mahogany finish by applying high-quality beeswax twice yearly along the grain, and clean the leather inset using a dry or slightly damp microfibre cloth without harsh chemical detergents.
