Figures on the Harbour Promenade, Brittany, Ca 1940, Dynamic Modernist French Oil on Canvas

1920 - 1940
Description

I would describe this work by André Chochon as poetry with its feet firmly on the ground! Inventive, resolutely modern and dynamic in its composition, it is humane and warm at the same time.

André Chochon was born in Brittany. From 1928 to 1930, he trained at the Beaux-Arts in Rennes from 1928-1930, where he was taught by Jules Ronsin. A rising star, he subsequently went to Paris and graduated from the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris in the studios of Lucien Simon and Sabatté.

Chochon exhibited from 1933 at the Society of French Artists. In 1938, he competed for the Prize of Rome and won the Second Grand Prix. In December 1940, he received a scholarship from the Casa Velasques to spend a year in Madrid but could not go to Spain until after the end of the war (1946-1947).

Our harbour scene, depicting his native Brittany, dates from the 1930s or the beginning of the 1940s. Measuring 46 x 55 cm, it is signed at the lower right. The overall size in a rustic stripped and limed wooded frame is 64 x 72 cm.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Mid-20th-century French modernist marine art features simplified geometric structures, expressive impasto brushwork, and atmospheric, muted colour palettes focused on working ports across Brittany and Normandy.

Artists primarily used oil paint applied onto stretched linen or cotton canvas, utilizing textured brushwork and palette knife techniques to convey atmospheric depth and movement.

Authentic works exhibit period-appropriate canvas weave, natural craquelure, oxidation on the reverse wooden stretcher bars, and original artist signatures consistent with period records.

Position the canvas as a focal accent above a console table or mantelpiece, pairing it with muted wall shades, natural timber, and neutral stone textures.

Dust the surface lightly with a dry, soft-bristled brush, keep the canvas away from direct sunlight or damp environments, and consult an art conservator for surface cleaning.
