An etagere is an open tiered shelving unit designed for displaying decorative objects, books, or small collections. These pieces use vertical space efficiently and stand freely or mount to a wall depending on the specific form.

How were wooden etagere units used?

Historically, owners placed these tiered stands in parlours, drawing rooms, or dining spaces to exhibit porcelain, silver, and treasured books. The open design allowed ornaments to be viewed easily from multiple angles within the room.

Where should I place an etagere?

Freestanding models suit corners, empty wall spaces, or behind seating areas where vertical display adds visual interest without bulk. Wall-mounted shelving units work well above sideboards or desks to utilise wall space effectively.

How do I care for antique wood?

Keep wooden tiered furniture away from direct sunlight and sudden temperature changes to prevent the timber and veneer from splitting. Dust regularly with a dry cloth and apply occasional appropriate wax polish to maintain the finish.
