How do I adjust wooden bookcase shelves?

Many nineteenth-century and Edwardian examples utilise adjustable shelf supports set into vertical wooden rachet strips or peg holes inside the carcase. Carefully lift each shelf to clear the supporting pins or brackets before repositioning them to the desired height.

What is the difference between open and glazed bookcases?

Open bookcases provide immediate access to volumes without doors, making them practical for everyday reading rooms and studies. Glazed bookcases use glass panels to protect valuable bindings from dust and light exposure while displaying the book spines.

How do I date a wooden bookcase?

Dating relies on observing the timber species, construction techniques, and stylistic ornament such as Georgian inlay or Arts and Crafts carving. Secondary woods at the back and drawer linings also help determine the likely period of manufacture.

Are these bookcases suitable for heavy books?

Solid mahogany, oak, and walnut library bookcases are built to support substantial weight across their timber shelves. Checking the thickness of the shelves and the stability of the upright supports ensures safe storage for large volumes.
