What is a studio easel?

A studio easel is a heavy floor-standing wooden frame designed to hold large canvases securely while artists work indoors. These robust pieces usually incorporate adjustable heights and shelves. They often feature wheels or castors for manoeuvrability around a large workspace and heavy timber construction to prevent tipping.

How do I use a folio stand?

A folio stand holds large flat paper items, prints, or artists portfolios in an upright or slightly angled position. They provide safe storage and easy browsing access. Unlike painting easels, these low racks use hinged frames to support heavy paper without creasing or bending the contents.

Can I use an antique easel for display?

Antique easels function exceptionally well for displaying framed artwork, mirrors, or photographs in domestic or gallery settings. Their adjustable ledges accommodate various frame depths. Many decorative examples from the nineteenth century were intended specifically to showcase finished pictures rather than serve as working studio furniture.

How do I date a wooden easel?

Dating relies on timber selection, mechanical fittings, and stylistic details such as Victorian carving or Regency proportions. Brass winding handles and iron ratchets often reflect period manufacturing techniques. Makers' marks or stamps, where present, help pinpoint the exact workshop and decade of production.
