How do I clean a painted wooden armoire?

Dust the surfaces regularly with a soft, dry cloth to prevent the accumulation of dirt on the painted finish. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners that can strip or discolour historical paint layers. For stubborn marks, use a damp cloth with mild soap, drying the wood immediately afterwards. Preserving the original patina requires gentle maintenance rather than aggressive restoration.

Can these cupboards be dismantled for transport?

Many older wardrobes and armoires were constructed with pegged frames that allow them to be disassembled into panels, cornices, and bases. This construction method was essential for moving large furniture through narrow doorways. Examine the joints and fixings carefully before attempting any movement. Professional removal is recommended for heavier oak and pine pieces to avoid damaging the historical woodwork.

Where should I place an armoire in my home?

These large storage units anchor bedrooms, hallways, and living spaces, providing substantial vertical volume without darkening a room. Placing them away from direct sunlight protects the painted wood from fading. Allow sufficient clearance for doors to swing fully open, particularly on pieces with wide panelled construction. Ensure the floor is level so the heavy frame does not warp over time.
