How do I choose the right size?

Consider the proportions of your bedroom, noting that nineteenth-century French sizing differs from modern standard mattress dimensions. Check the internal measurements of the wooden frame carefully to ensure standard modern mattresses will fit comfortably between the carved headboard and footboard.

Are these beds made of solid timber?

Many examples are constructed using a combination of solid timber and walnut veneer over secondary woods. Both solid and veneered constructions were standard practice for high-quality furniture of the period. Examine the grain patterns and edge joins to understand how the materials were applied across the headboard and side rails.

How do I care for antique walnut?

Keep the wood away from direct sunlight and sudden temperature changes to prevent the veneer from drying out or splitting. Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth and avoid harsh chemical polishes. Applying a traditional beeswax occasionally helps nourish the timber and maintains the natural lustre of the surface grain.

Can I use a modern mattress?

Most antique frames accommodate modern mattresses, though custom sizing or modern slatted bases may be required depending on the internal dimensions. Verify the width and length of the bedstead before purchasing bedding to ensure a proper fit within the wooden side rails.
