How do I identify a Victorian walnut armchair?

Victorian walnut armchairs generally display deep colour in the timber, heavy proportions, and robust button-tufted or sprung upholstery. Carved foliate details and cabriole legs frequently appear on pieces from this era. Makers of the period utilised solid walnut frames combined with horsehair stuffing and durable woven fabrics to handle daily drawing room use.

What is a bergere chair?

A bergere chair is an upholstered seat featuring woven cane panels along the arms and backrest. This construction lightens the visual weight of the walnut frame while offering comfortable support. These chairs usually include a loose feather or down seat cushion covered in silk, velvet, or damask.

Can I mix Art Deco and Victorian walnut seating?

Mixing Art Deco walnut seating with Victorian pieces works well if the rich brown tones of the walnut timber provide a unifying element. Art Deco lines offer a geometric contrast to the curving forms of earlier nineteenth-century frames. Keeping upholstery tones within a similar palette helps bridge different eras in a single room.

How should I care for antique walnut frames?

Antique walnut framing requires minimal maintenance, relying on occasional dusting with a soft cloth to protect the polished surface. Avoid placing wooden seating in direct sunlight or near heat sources to prevent timber splitting. Professional cleaning preserves the integrity of historic textiles and delicate frame inlays.
