A cassone is a large Italian marriage chest designed to hold bridal linens and valuables. These decorative coffers often stood against palace walls. They represent some of the most ornate examples of historical domestic storage.

How are old chests cleaned?

Historic timber requires gentle dusting with a dry, soft cloth to protect the patina. Wax can be applied sparingly to nourish dry walnut surfaces. Avoid modern liquid polishes and harsh chemical cleaners entirely.

Where should I place a coffer?

These chests fit well at the foot of a bed, beneath windows, or as statement pieces in hallways. Their flat tops also allow them to function as display surfaces for lamps or ceramics. Ensure placement avoids direct sunlight and strong heat sources.

How do I date a chest?

Dating relies on examining the timber species, joinery techniques, and decorative styles like Renaissance carving or Georgian proportions. Hand-forged hardware also offers clues to the period of manufacture. Comparison with documented examples helps narrow down the decade or century.
