What is a wooden purdonium?

A wooden purdonium is a Victorian or Edwardian fireside cabinet built to hold coal next to the fireplace. These pieces keep fuel neatly concealed within a timber box. Most examples include a metal liner to catch dust and often feature brass handles or a matching shovel.

How do I use a coal box today?

These boxes function well as practical storage for fireplace logs, kindling, or peat briquettes by the hearth. They also serve as decorative side tables or blanket stores in living spaces. The sturdy timber construction and internal liners make them suitable for holding modern fireside accessories.

How do I tell Victorian from Edwardian pieces?

Victorian pieces often display heavier proportions, dark mahogany or walnut timbers, and robust brass mounts. Rococo Revival influences frequently appear in the carved details of this era. Edwardian examples lean towards lighter oak, simpler lines, or delicate inlaid decoration, reflecting the transition into the twentieth century.

What woods were used for purdoniums?

Cabinetmakers primarily used mahogany, oak, and walnut to construct these fireside containers. Figured grains and pollard oak appear on more decorative examples. Woods were selected for their ability to withstand daily handling while matching the formal furniture of the drawing room.
