How do I date a wooden drawer unit?

Dating relies on observing timber choices, construction methods, and hardware styles associated with periods like the Victorian era or the 1920s. Secondary woods inside drawer construction often provide additional clues to origin and age. Changes in handle design, drawer dovetailing, and overall proportions help narrow down the decade of manufacture.

What is the difference between a chest and a bank of drawers?

A chest of drawers is traditionally a domestic piece meant for bedroom storage, featuring stacked horizontal drawers of varying depths. A bank of drawers usually denotes a commercial, workshop, or office unit with many smaller compartments. Commercial banks often include label holders and patent mechanisms designed for filing or retail display.

How do I maintain antique wood furniture?

Maintenance involves keeping timber pieces away from direct heat sources and sudden humidity changes to prevent wood splitting or veneer lifting. Regular dusting with a soft, dry cloth preserves the polished surface. Applying occasional appropriate wax feeds the grain and maintains the historical patina without stripping the finish.
