What counts as a wood carrier?

A wood carrier includes any portable wooden receptacle or stand designed to move items from place to place. This covers bottle holders, railway luggage carriers, log baskets, and cutlery boxes. Items range from refined mahogany pieces meant for the dining room to robust iron-bound trugs built for garden and farm work.

How old are these carriers?

The pieces span multiple centuries, with examples appearing from the Georgian era through the Victorian period and into the early twentieth century. Earlier items tend to use fine hardwoods like mahogany, while nineteenth and twentieth-century pieces often reflect regional styles such as Scandinavian rustic pine or traditional English country work.

How were bottle carriers used?

Bottle carriers served to transport wine and spirits safely between cellars, dining rooms, and sideboard tables without tipping or damaging the glassware. Wealthier households used polished mahogany or rosewood holders with brass mounts, while utility versions handled heavier day-to-day transport tasks.

Can I use these for logs?

Certain robust items, such as blacksmith-made iron log carriers and heavy wooden trugs, were built specifically to haul fuel to the hearth. More delicate pieces like book stands or painted rice baskets are unsuited for heavy fuel and are better preserved for display or light storage.
