How do I read a stick barometer?

Read the height of the mercury column using the graduated scale mounted alongside the glass tube. Rising levels generally indicate fair weather, while falling levels suggest approaching rain or wind. Many instruments include a sliding vernier scale operated by a small knob, allowing you to measure fractional changes in pressure accurately.

Are these barometers still accurate today?

Most vintage barometers can be calibrated to provide reasonably accurate local weather readings, provided their internal aneroid capsules or mercury columns remain undamaged. Adjustment screws accessible from the back or base allow you to match the needle to current local barometric pressure. However, many owners display them primarily as historical decorative objects rather than relying on them for daily meteorological forecasts.

Where should I hang a wall barometer?

Hang your barometer on an interior wall away from direct sunlight, central heating radiators, and damp exterior walls. Rapid temperature fluctuations can affect the wood case and the mechanical calibration inside. A stable indoor environment preserves both the delicate timber finish and the mechanical sensitivity of the brass components.

How do I tell a Georgian barometer from a Victorian one?

Georgian barometers tend to feature simpler, elegant mahogany stick cases with understated string inlay and architectural pediments. Victorian examples frequently embrace more exuberant carving, rosewood or walnut veneers, and complex banjo or skeletonised aneroid layouts. Examining the dial style, secondary instruments like thermometers, and overall timber choice helps clarify the period of manufacture.
