What is a vintage wax seal fob used for?

These pieces served to press an owner's personal crest or initials into molten sealing wax to close letters securely. They hung from watch chains or were worn on charm bracelets as daily accessories. Today, collectors appreciate them as wearable pendants or desk ornaments that connect modern stationery routines to historical letter-writing traditions.

How do I date a vintage wax seal?

Dating relies on metal hallmarks, stylistic clues like Victorian ornamentation or Edwardian silver work, and the specific form of the mount. Georgian pieces often feature heavier gold work and distinct swivel designs. Examining accompanying materials, such as vellum indentures or boxed desk sets, also helps narrow the era of production down to a specific century.

What are seal fobs typically made from?

Makers utilised precious metals including nine-carat gold, rose gold, sterling silver, and gilt base metals to form the bodies and chains. These mounts held natural hardstones like carnelian, bloodstone, and sardonyx. Some desk sets and novelty pieces incorporated glass seals, steel components, or enamel details alongside the primary metal structures.

How should I display or store my desk seals?

Desk seals and fob pendants benefit from being stored in soft-lined compartments to protect the softer stones like carnelian and bloodstone from scratching. Desk accessories can be kept flat on surfaces or housed within display cases. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners on gilt metal and silver parts to preserve the original patina accumulated over the centuries.
