What is a vintage vinegar bottle used for?

A vintage vinegar bottle held table vinegar for dining service, usually sitting alongside a matching oil bottle within a cruet stand. These vessels allowed diners to dispense condiments cleanly at the table during meals before pre-bottled condiments became common.

How do I date a silver mounted bottle?

Dating relies on hallmarks stamped onto the silver mounts, stylistic cues of the glass cutting, and the overall design of the cruet stand. Edwardian and Victorian pieces often display distinct ornamentation and maker marks that reference specific manufacturing decades.

Are cruet bottles always found in sets?

While many survive within their original stands alongside oil and condiment bottles, individual bottles appear independently. Finding a complete set with matching bottles remaining intact is less common than discovering lone vessels or partial groupings.

How do I clean silver mounts safely?

Silver mounts require gentle cleaning with a soft cloth and a specialised silver polish formulated to protect plated or sterling surfaces. Harsh abrasives should be kept away from both the metalwork and the antique glass or crystal bodies.
