What is a barrister bookcase?

A barrister bookcase is a stacking modular cabinet with glazed doors that lift and slide back into the case. It allowed travelling lawyers to transport their libraries securely. Today, these units function well in studies and living rooms for displaying books while keeping them free from dust.

How do revolving bookcases work?

Revolving bookcases rest on a hidden internal mechanism with ball bearings that permits the entire tier structure to spin smoothly in a circle. They sit on low bases with legs or castors. Their compact footprint makes them practical for placing beside armchairs or in corners where floor space is limited.

What periods do these bookcases span?

The selection covers pieces from the Georgian and Regency eras, through Victorian and Edwardian times, up to the 1920s and 1930s. Each period brought distinct woods and decorative details. Early examples lean towards fine mahogany, while Edwardian pieces frequently showcase carved or quarter-sawn oak.

Are stacking bookcases fixed together?

Stacking bookcases consist of separate modular sections that rest one upon another, secured by base plinths and top cornices rather than permanent fixings. This design made them straightforward to move. Buyers can dismantle or reassemble the tiers by lifting each individual shelf section off the one below it.
