How does a tantalus lock work?

Turning a key in the mechanism releases a vertical metal bar that holds the decanter stoppers down. When the bar is locked, the stoppers cannot be removed and the bottles cannot be taken from the frame. This clever restraint gave the apparatus its name, offering a visual tease to guests while keeping the contents secure from unauthorised access.

What were tantalus sets used for?

Victorian and Edwardian households used them in dining rooms and studies to store spirits like whiskey, brandy and gin. They kept expensive liquors safe in homes staffed by servants. They also functioned as portable barware for after-dinner entertaining, presenting the host's collection ready for evening gatherings.

How do I date a wooden tantalus?

Dating relies on timber choices, hardware styles and manufacturing marks. Victorian pieces often use heavy oak, coromandel or brass mounts, while Edwardian versions lean towards simpler oak frames. Art Deco examples introduce chrome and modernist lines. Maker marks and silver hallmarks stamped on the metal mounts provide precise chronological clues.

Are the decanters removable?

Decanters can only be removed when the locking mechanism is unlocked and the retaining bar slides clear of the stoppers. Once secured with the key, the bottles remain firmly trapped in their slots. This design allows the liquor to be seen through the glass while physically blocking the stoppers from being lifted.

What is a games compendium combination?

Many larger tantalus sets include a pull-out drawer or hinged compartment beneath the bottles to hold playing cards, chess pieces and gaming boards. This combined two popular parlour pastimes into one piece of furniture. These combined units represent the more elaborate end of nineteenth-century entertaining accessories.
