How do I identify the age of a print?

Examine the paper stock, the printing technique and any associated plate marks or publisher stamps visible under magnification. Older works often utilise hand-laid paper and specific engraving methods tied to nineteenth or eighteenth-century practices. Frame construction and backing materials provide secondary clues to age. Original framing elements corresponding to Georgian, Victorian or Edwardian periods help corroborate the date of the enclosed artwork.

What is the difference between an engraving and a lithograph?

Engravings involve incising lines into a hard plate which then holds ink for transfer under pressure, resulting in crisp, linear detail. Lithography relies on a chemical aversion between grease and water on a flat stone or metal surface to create painterly tones. Under closer inspection, engravings show subtle indentations in the paper where the plate pressed down. Lithographs display a smoother surface texture without plate marks, relying on dot patterns or flat ink areas.

How should I care for antique paper art?

Keep framed pieces away from direct sunlight and areas subject to high humidity to prevent paper degradation and fading of inks. UV-filtering glass offers essential protection for vulnerable watercolours and coloured engravings. Maintain stable indoor temperatures to avoid the expansion and contraction of wood frames and paper supports. Professional framing with acid-free backing boards preserves the integrity of older works.

Are artist proofs more desirable?

Artist proofs generally carry higher interest because they were pulled before the commercial edition to check plate quality. Creators often retained these impressions for their own records or close associates. Signatures and pencil annotations on proofs confirm the artist's personal approval of the print. This association makes them distinct from standard published editions.
