Can garden statues stay outside in winter?

Cast stone and sandstone garden pieces generally withstand exterior conditions, but prolonged freezing water in hairline cracks causes expansion and damage. Raising statues off bare soil on bricks or wooden blocks prevents ground moisture absorption during colder months. Protecting delicate carved details with breathable covers during severe frosts ensures longevity. Indoor storage is advisable for porous or high-value garden ornaments when temperatures plummet.

What is an animalier sculpture?

Animalier art emerged during the nineteenth century in Europe, focusing specifically on the accurate and dynamic portrayal of animals. Sculptors studied living subjects in menageries and rural settings to capture authentic movement and anatomy. Pieces in this tradition range from bronze casts to carved marble and stone studies. They remain prized for their observation of natural behaviour rather than idealised forms.

How are hardstone carvings displayed?

Small hardstone figures and brush pots are traditionally shown on stable, level surfaces away from direct sunlight, which can alter certain mineral tones over time. Placing them on dedicated wooden stands or within display cabinets protects their fine edges from accidental knocks. Adequate lighting from a stable source highlights the translucency and grain of materials like jade and carnelian agate. Positioning them at eye level allows the detail of the carving to be fully appreciated.
