What is a silver meat dome used for?

These large domed covers were placed over roasted joints of meat on large platters to keep the food warm as it travelled from the kitchen to the dining table. They also served a decorative purpose on grand dining tables, reflecting candlelight off their polished curved surfaces.

How do I clean a silver plated dome?

Use a soft cloth and a reputable silver cream designed for plated items. Avoid harsh abrasive cloths that might wear through the thin silver layer to the base metal underneath. Wash the piece in warm soapy water afterwards and dry thoroughly with a lint-free cloth to maintain the shine.

How can I tell Old Sheffield Plate from EPNS?

Old Sheffield Plate reveals a thin line of copper where the fused metal edges meet, particularly around rims or wear points. EPNS typically shows a greyish nickel alloy base beneath worn silver rather than warm copper. Weight and manufacturing era also provide clues, as Old Sheffield Plate generally dates from the Georgian and early nineteenth century.

Can I use these domes for everyday dining?

Many vintage domes remain structurally sound for regular use on the dining table. Care must be taken with historic plating and soldered handles during washing. Handlers should lift them by their designated grips rather than the body to prevent accidental bending of the antique metal.
