How do I identify vintage royal dux figures?

Look for the distinctive pink triangular stamp or applied pink triangle ceramic pad embedded in the base of the piece, alongside impressed model numbers. These factory marks help distinguish genuine Bohemian output from contemporary copies. Studying the modelling style also reveals authenticity. Early pieces often reflect intricate Art Nouveau curves or detailed nineteenth-century realism before shifting to geometric Art Deco lines.

What periods do these figures cover?

The listings encompass nineteenth-century academic models, Edwardian and Art Nouveau creations from the early 1900s, and later 1920s and 1930s Art Deco pieces. Each era displays distinct aesthetic priorities in dress and form. Earlier works lean towards classical pastoral and orientalist subjects, while the interwar decades introduce stylised flappers and modern canine models.

Are these pieces made of porcelain or ceramic?

Bohemian production utilised both standard glazed porcelain and biscuit porcelain, which lacks a glossy outer finish. The choice of body depended on whether the modeller wanted a shiny glazed surface or a matte stone-like texture. Many figures combine both, leaving flesh tones in matte bisque while glazing garments and accessories for contrast.

How were these figures used originally?

They served as decorative ornaments for domestic interiors, displayed on mantelpieces, sideboards, or pedestals in middle-class and elite homes. Large monumental examples acted as focal points for formal reception rooms. Smaller figurine groups told narrative stories, depicting everyday rural workers, mythological subjects, or companion animals.

How do I clean antique porcelain safely?

Dust surfaces gently with a soft, dry brush to prevent dirt accumulation in crevices and delicate painted areas. Avoid using chemical cleaners or submerging pieces with exposed enamel or gilt highlights. If washing is necessary, use lukewarm water and mild soap on glazed sections only, drying immediately with a lint-free cloth.
