What is a bedside locker?

A bedside locker is a small cabinet or cupboard placed next to a bed to provide enclosed storage and a surface for night-time essentials. These pieces usually feature a door opening to a shelf alongside a single drawer. They combine practical utility with distinct period styling, making them a functional addition to a bedroom scheme.

How do I spot an Edwardian oak locker?

Edwardian pieces often display lighter oak tones and simpler lines than their heavier Victorian predecessors. They frequently incorporate understated panel doors and brass handles reflecting early twentieth-century domestic design. Examining the internal construction and backboards helps confirm the period timber and manufacturing methods.

Are marble tops original?

Many period bedside cabinets were manufactured with fitted marble tops to provide a durable and hygienic surface. These stone slabs are typically heavy, inset directly into the wooden frame of the cabinet top. Checking the fit against the surrounding timber helps verify that the marble belongs to the original construction.

How do I care for vintage oak furniture?

Vintage oak benefits from regular dusting with a dry, soft cloth and occasional treatment with appropriate beeswax to nourish the timber. Avoiding direct sunlight and sudden temperature changes protects the wood from drying or splitting. Marble surfaces require prompt wiping of moisture to prevent staining or etching over time.
