What is a loo table used for?

Originally designed for card games and social gatherings in the nineteenth century, these versatile pieces now serve as impressive coffee tables, breakfast tables or decorative centrepieces. Their large surfaces and tilt-top mechanisms make them practical for modern living spaces where flexible furniture is useful.

How do I date a Victorian table?

Dating relies on observing the timber choices, decorative styles and construction techniques recorded across the nineteenth century. Pieces from the 1830s often show William IV influences with heavy mahogany or rosewood, while 1870s examples frequently feature burr walnut and marquetry. Stylistic shifts from early revival periods to later Edwardian production help narrow the decade of manufacture.

How does the tilt-top mechanism work?

The tabletop is mounted on a pivoting catch that allows the surface to release and lock into a vertical plane. This allowed the table to be pushed against a wall when not in use. In daily use, the catch secures the top flat for serving or display.

Where should I place a centre table?

Centre tables are designed to sit freestanding in the middle of a room, allowing people to walk around all sides. They anchor a seating arrangement in larger reception rooms or libraries. Ensure there is sufficient clearance around the pedestal base for movement.
