What were wooden boxes with locks used for originally?

These boxes served to protect valuable commodities and personal items from theft or tampering in the household. Common contents included loose tea leaves, correspondence, spirits, jewellery, and tobacco. Over time, specific forms evolved for specific rooms, such as stationery cabinets for the desk and tantalus sets for the dining room or parlour.

How do I know if the lock and key are original?

Examine the fit of the lock plate against the wood and look for consistent patination on the metal surface. Original locks usually show age-appropriate wear that matches the interior hardware of the box. Replacement keys are common, but a mechanism that engages smoothly with the original mortise lock indicates a well-preserved piece.

How should I care for a vintage wooden box?

Keep the wood away from direct sources of heat and fluctuating humidity to prevent the panels from splitting or warping. Apply a suitable wax polish periodically to nourish the surface and maintain the natural lustre of the timber. Handle the locking mechanisms with care and avoid forcing vintage keys if the internal levers feel stiff.

How can I tell a Georgian box from a Victorian one?

Georgian pieces, particularly from the eighteenth century, tend to emphasise clean architectural proportions, linear mahogany or partridge-wood veneers, and subtle brass escutcheons. Victorian boxes often display heavier ornamentation, elaborate brass mounts, and denser structural timbers like oak or burr walnut. Examining the interior construction methods and secondary woods also helps clarify the period of manufacture.
