An inkstand is a desk accessory that holds inkwells together with trays or grooves for resting dip pens. These pieces often include compartments for sealing wax, sanders or matches to complete the writing process.

How do I clean a vintage inkwell?

Glass inserts wash safely in warm water to remove dried ink residue without touching the surrounding metal or stone. Metal and wooden bases require dry dusting and gentle polishing suited to brass, silver or polished timber.

Are original glass inserts common?

Many surviving sets retain their original cut or moulded glass bottles, though replacements occur frequently in older desk stands. Matching glass shape and collar dimensions helps identify period replacements.

What woods were used for desk stands?

Cabinet makers utilised dense hardwoods like walnut, burr walnut, coromandel, mahogany and rosewood for durable writing surfaces. These timbers often featured brass mounts, marquetry inlay or papier-mache construction.
