How were powder boxes used?

These boxes sat upon dressing tables to hold loose face powder, or served as portable compact cases for touch-ups during the day. Women used them alongside matching brushes and jars as part of daily grooming rituals. Interior compartments often held sifters or small mirrors for powder application. Smaller variants functioned as pill boxes or trinket containers for rings and pins.

How do I date an enamel box?

British silver pieces carry hallmarks that include date letters and assay office symbols, such as the anchor for Birmingham or the leopard's head for London. These marks provide precise years of manufacture. Stylistic indicators like geometric Art Deco motifs or Edwardian scrollwork help place unmarked continental or chrome pieces within their correct decades.

What is guilloche enamel?

Guilloche is a decorative metalworking technique involving precise mechanical engraving. Artisans cut repeating wave or sunburst patterns into the metal base before firing transparent enamel over the top. The underlying engraved texture catches the light through the coloured glaze, creating a shimmering depth.

Are these items made of solid silver?

Many dressing table jars and compacts feature sterling silver lids combined with cut glass or metal bodies. Fully metallic pieces are often constructed from sterling silver, 800 silver, chrome, or brass. Assay marks on the metal mounts confirm the specific standard of the silver used in each individual piece.
