What is a lavalier necklace?

A lavalier is a specific form of drop pendant necklace that became popular during the Edwardian period. It typically suspends a decorative element from a fine chain, incorporating one or more dangling gemstones. These pieces often feature openwork gold frames set with pearls and coloured stones like amethyst or peridot. Their design creates noticeable movement when worn against the skin.

How do I date a drop pendant?

Dating relies on combining the specific style of the metalwork with the cut of the gemstones and the materials used. Edwardian pieces often show millegrain work and organic floral motifs in yellow gold. Art Deco examples shift toward platinum, white gold, and geometric arrangements with step-cut or old-cut diamonds. Hallmarks and maker stamps, where present, provide further chronological confirmation.

What is paste jewellery?

Paste is a heavy, hand-cut glass used historically as an artisan substitute for precious gemstones. In antique drop pendants, it provides high brilliance and deep colour without relying on natural stones. Craftsmen shaped and foiled paste carefully to mimic diamonds, amethysts, and aquamarines. These pieces were valued for their artistry rather than purely for the material cost.

How should I care for an antique pendant?

Antique pendants require gentle handling due to delicate settings and organic materials like seed pearls. Cleaning should involve soft cloths and warm water, avoiding harsh chemical dips or ultrasonic machines. Storing necklaces flat or hung separately prevents the fine chains from kinking and protects vulnerable gemstone drops from impact.
