How do I clean crystal drops?

Remove the glass drops carefully from the metal arms before washing them in warm soapy water. Dry each piece thoroughly with a lint-free cloth to restore its sparkle. Avoid using harsh chemical cleaners on the gilt brass or bronze mounts while wiping the surrounding frame. Reattach the pendants securely once the entire fixture is completely dry.

Were these originally wired for electricity?

Most of these pieces started life holding real wax candles in domestic interiors. Many examples now bear conversion wiring for modern electric use. Check the internal wiring condition of any converted piece before plugging it into a mains supply. A qualified electrician can safely update older fittings to meet modern standards.

How do I date a brass and crystal piece?

Examine the casting quality of the brass, bronze, or ormolu framework for signs of hand-chasing. Heavier mounts and hand-cut crystal drops typically point towards nineteenth-century production. Stylistic cues such as Art Nouveau sinuous lines or strict Louis XVI symmetry also help narrow down the decade. Inspect screw threads and joining methods for further clues about manufacturing age.

Where should I place a heavy candelabra?

Position these substantial pieces on sturdy sideboards, mantelpieces, or dining tables where their weight is fully supported. Wall-mounted sconces require secure fixings into solid masonry or studs. Keep them away from high-traffic household areas where passing bodies might catch hanging crystal pendants. Ensure the surface level is even to prevent any risk of toppling.
