What is vintage boudoir seating?

Vintage boudoir seating comprises low chairs and small stools made for private rooms like dressing areas and bedrooms. These items focus on intimate comfort and decorative French styles. They include slipper chairs, accent chairs, and circular stools designed to complement private spaces rather than formal reception rooms.

How were these chairs used?

Original owners utilised these seats in private dressing rooms for putting on shoes and garments. Their low profile made them practical for personal grooming tasks. Over time, people also placed them in bedrooms and sitting spaces as decorative accent pieces that offered a soft place to sit.

How do I choose upholstery for these chairs?

Many nineteenth-century pieces arrive ready for new fabric, allowing you to select textiles that match your interior scheme. Traditional choices include velvet and patterned fabrics that reflect historical aesthetics. Consider whether the piece retains original calico or hessian foundations when planning your upholstery project with a professional.

How do I tell nineteenth century styles apart?

Nineteenth-century pieces range from ornate French Empire and Napoleon III designs to simpler Victorian and Edwardian forms. Look for carved giltwood frames and painted finishes to identify French origins. British Victorian examples often feature different upholstery methods and timber tones compared to their continental counterparts.
