How do I hang a heavy mirror safely?

These substantial frames require secure fixings screwed directly into wall studs or heavy-duty masonry plugs. Using a professional framing wire or heavy strap hangers distributed across the back ensures the weight is supported evenly. Check the stability of the wooden frame and backing boards before mounting any large wall piece. Ensuring the wall brackets match the weight of the timber and glass prevents accidental slipping.

Are the mirror plates original?

Many pieces retain their original glass, which typically exhibits natural ageing, foxing, and dark spots across the surface. These blemishes provide the authentic character expected from nineteenth-century glass. Replacements do occur over long periods of use, but original plates are usually identified by irregular thickness and gentle distortion in the reflection. Examining the edges where the glass meets the frame often reveals age-appropriate wear.

How do I clean antique glass?

Wipe the glass gently with a soft microfibre cloth slightly dampened with distilled water or a mild, ammonia-free glass cleaner. Avoid spraying liquid directly onto the glass to prevent moisture seeping behind the silvering. Take care around the edges of old plates where the silver backing is fragile and prone to further flaking. Gentle maintenance preserves the delicate historical surface without causing damage.

What rooms suit a bistro mirror?

Hallways, living rooms, and bedrooms benefit from the reflective depth and French character these mirrors introduce. Tall pier mirrors work particularly well in narrow spaces to bounce ambient light around the room. Kitchens and dining areas also accommodate brass brasserie mirrors naturally, nodding to their original hospitality settings. Positioning them opposite windows maximises natural daylight.
