A tantalus is a locking barware stand that holds decanters firmly inside a frame. The locking mechanism prevents guests or servants from pouring spirits without authorization. First appearing in the Victorian era, these stands keep cut crystal bottles on display while securing the contents inside.

How do I tell Victorian from Edwardian stands?

Victorian stands often feature heavier ornamentation, darker woods like coromandel, and elaborate silver plate work. Edwardian pieces tend to use oak with cleaner lines. Art Nouveau and Arts and Crafts influences also appear around the turn of the century, introducing wrought iron and stylized floral motifs.

Are keys usually included?

Many vintage tantalus units survive without their original working keys due to the passage of time. The locking bars can often be unlocked by specialists if a key is missing. Check individual descriptions to see if a working key accompanies the silver plated frame.

How do I clean silver plated frames?

Use a soft cloth and a gentle silver polish specifically formulated for plated items to maintain the shine without wearing through the thin silver layer. Avoid harsh abrasives on both the metal mounts and the cut crystal decanters to preserve their finish.
