What is a mantel lustre?

A mantel lustre is an ornamental vase featuring a ring of suspended glass or crystal drops around the rim. They were created to sit on fireplace shelves and sparkle in the ambient light. These pieces often came in pairs and were produced in rich colours such as ruby, green, and cranberry glass during the nineteenth century.

How were garniture sets displayed?

Garniture sets were arranged symmetrically across a fireplace mantelpiece, with the tallest centrepiece in the middle and matching side vases flanking it. This created a balanced focal point for the main reception room. The matching vessels helped tie together the decorative scheme of the interior.

What are spill vases used for?

Spill vases held twisted paper spills or wooden tapers used to transfer flames from the fireplace fire to candles and lamps. They kept these lighting aids close at hand. Many examples take the form of pottery figures, animals, or simple cylindrical holders.

How do I identify Victorian glass colours?

Victorian glass colours range from deep ruby and cranberry achieved with gold chloride to rich greens and opaque whites. These hues were often produced using layered flash techniques. Examining the depth of the colour and the finish around the pontil mark helps determine the period of manufacture.
