What is a victorian lustre vase?

A victorian lustre vase is an ornamental glass vessel featuring hanging crystal pendants around the rim. They were designed to reflect candlelight and gaslight in nineteenth-century parlours. Most examples seen today date from the mid to late nineteenth century and come in vibrant colours like ruby, green, and cranberry.

Were these vases used for flowers?

Despite being called vases, lustres were strictly decorative ornament rather than functional flower containers. The central well is often narrow and cluttered by the hanging crystal prisms. Placing stems inside would interfere with the pendants and obscure the glass body.

How do I date a lustre vase?

Dating relies on stylistic clues, colour chemistry, and manufacturing techniques recorded in nineteenth-century piece profiles. Deeper ruby tones and heavy lead crystal often point towards the mid-nineteenth century. Later examples from around nineteen hundred show different glass formulations and brighter, varied hues.

How should I clean the crystals?

Cleaning requires removing each crystal pendant individually and washing them in warm soapy water. Harsh chemicals can damage the surface of older glass and any applied gilding. Dry the prisms thoroughly with a soft cloth before rehanging them on the vase.
