What is genre artwork?

Genre artwork depicts scenes from everyday life, such as domestic interiors, street vendors or rural work. These pieces focus on ordinary people rather than historical heroes or grand landscapes. Artists used these subjects to tell stories, record social history and capture contemporary manners. They range from lighthearted scenes of children and pets to more serious social commentary.

Are original frames important?

Original frames provide context and help date the artwork accurately. Period frames often feature hand-carved gesso details finished in gold leaf. Matching a nineteenth-century painting with a contemporary frame preserves its historic integrity. Collectors value pieces that retain their original surrounds.

How do I care for oil paintings?

Oil paintings on canvas require stable indoor humidity and temperature to prevent cracking of the paint and gesso. Keep them away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Dust surfaces gently with a soft, dry brush. Avoid using liquid cleaners or damp cloths on the canvas or the frame.

How are watercolours preserved?

Watercolours on paper are sensitive to light and fade when exposed to direct sunlight. They benefit from hanging in shaded areas away from windows. Glass protects the paper surface from dust and atmospheric pollutants. Ensure the framing uses acid-free materials to prevent yellowing over time.
