What is an upholstered seat carver?

An upholstered seat carver is an armchair with a padded seat, designed specifically to accompany a set of dining chairs. These pieces provide arm support and are traditionally placed at the head and foot of a dining table.

How do I date a carver chair?

Dating relies on identifying the prevailing style, such as Regency curves, Victorian carving, or Edwardian inlay, alongside the primary timber used. Examining the construction methods and upholstery style helps place the piece within the nineteenth or early twentieth century.

Are carvers sold individually or in sets?

Carver chairs appear both as individual pairs and as component pieces within larger dining chair sets. Sets often include a specific ratio of standard dining chairs paired with two carver armchairs.

What woods are used for these chairs?

Cabinet makers predominantly utilised mahogany, walnut, and oak for the structural frames of these armchairs. Additional materials such as maple, satinwood, and leather appear in specific revival and decorative pieces.
