What pieces comprise a complete suite?

A standard suite consists of a settee paired with one or two matching armchairs, creating a coordinated seating arrangement for a room. Larger salon groupings may extend to five pieces, including additional chairs or chaises. Matching frames and textiles unite the individual seats into a single decorative scheme.

How do I date an upholstered suite?

Dating relies on the style of the wooden framework and the silhouette of the carving, such as Victorian spoon backs or Art Deco geometric lines. Timber choices like walnut, mahogany, and satinwood also point towards specific design eras. Upholstery textiles can be later replacements, so the underlying timber frame provides the most reliable guide to age.

Where should I place a large lounge suite?

These sizeable seating groups suit spacious reception rooms, drawing rooms, or master sitting spaces where multiple people can gather. Their matching aesthetic requires enough open floor area to let the full suite breathe without crowding. Positioning the settee as the focal point with flanking armchairs creates a balanced conversation area.

What is the difference between a salon suite and a lounge suite?

Salon suites originate from formal entertaining spaces, often featuring gilded woodwork, exposed carved frames, and lighter French-inspired upholstery. Lounge suites lean towards comfort with deeper seating and softer padding suited to relaxed daily use. Both categories provide matched sets, but their intended domestic settings shape their visual weight and construction.
