How do I care for antique leather?

Antique leather benefits from regular dusting with a soft, dry cloth and occasional treatment with appropriate conservation balms to prevent drying. Avoiding direct sunlight and intense heat sources protects the material from cracking. Natural wear and patination form part of the history of nineteenth-century leather, so aggressive cleaning should be avoided.

Where were these pieces used?

Original owners placed these sofas and settees in country house libraries, formal drawing rooms, and private parlours. Larger models accommodated formal entertaining and relaxation. Chaise longues typically occupied bedrooms, boudoirs, or private sitting rooms for daytime resting.

How do I identify a Victorian piece?

Victorian examples often feature dense timbers like mahogany or rosewood, hand-tied coil springs, and traditional horsehair stuffing under leather or heavy fabric. Their proportions tend to be heavy and substantial. Turned wooden legs, brass castors, and hand-carved frames further point to nineteenth-century British and French workshop production.
