How do I clean a triptych table mirror?

Use a soft, lint-free cloth and a mild glass cleaner sprayed onto the cloth rather than directly onto the glass, preventing moisture from seeping behind the plate into the foil backing. Take care around the wooden or brass frames by dusting them gently with a dry cloth and avoiding harsh chemical polishes that might damage antique finishes.

Were these mirrors always attached to tables?

Many examples were manufactured as integral components of dressing chests or larger bedroom suites, secured permanently to the rear of the cabinet base. Other versions were built as standalone table mirrors with their own support stands or feet, allowing them to be placed freely on any suitable surface.

How do I date an Edwardian mirror?

Edwardian pieces often display revival styles such as Queen Anne or Sheraton influences, combined with construction methods typical of the early twentieth century. Examining the backboards, screw types, and hinge mechanisms helps distinguish Edwardian production from later Art Deco or nineteenth-century examples.

Can the side panels be adjusted safely?

Original brass hinges are designed to allow the wings to pivot smoothly, provided the tension screws are balanced correctly and the frame remains stable. Avoid forcing stiff hinges without first checking for accumulated dust or minor misalignments that could strain the joints.
