What is the difference between a whatnot and an etagere?

A whatnot is a traditional English multi-tiered shelving unit used for books or ornaments, while an etagere is the continental equivalent sharing the same open display purpose. Both forms utilise multiple levels supported by vertical posts, though etageres more frequently incorporate decorative French marquetry.

How do I hang wall shelves safely?

Hanging shelves require secure fixing into wall studs or solid masonry using appropriate brackets to bear the weight of the timber and displayed objects. Period pieces often feature original brass hanging plates that must be checked for strength before installation.

Can these shelves support heavy books?

Smaller hanging shelves and delicate etageres are intended for light display rather than heavy volumes, which suit sturdier floor-standing bookcases. Checking the thickness of the mahogany boards and the stability of the upright supports will indicate weight capacity.

How do I date a mahogany display shelf?

Dating relies on observing construction methods, timber choice, and stylistic markers such as Regency curves, Victorian barley twists, or Edwardian simplicity. Secondary woods and the style of joinery also assist in placing the piece within the eighteenth, nineteenth, or early twentieth century.
