What subjects appear in these sunset landscape painting works?

These artworks depict rural fields, harvest scenes, rivers and mountainous lochs at dusk. Coastal views, marine waters and harbour scenes also feature prominently. Many compositions record specific British and European locations, from the Thames in London to the Scottish Highlands and Welsh coasts.

How do I hang a large oil painting safely?

Large canvases require sturdy wall anchors matched to the weight of the wooden frame and painting. Professional picture hooks fixed directly into wall studs provide the necessary support. Position the work away from direct sunlight and heat sources to protect the oil paint and canvas from environmental stress.

Are watercolours different from oil paintings?

Watercolours use water-soluble pigments on paper, creating translucent washes that suit delicate atmospheric effects. Oils use pigment suspended in drying oil on canvas, allowing heavier textures and deeper tones. Watercolours require protective glass framing, whereas oil paintings on canvas remain open to the air.

How do I identify the period of a frame?

Period frames often display hand-carved wooden moulding, gesso ornamentation and original gold leaf gilding. Construction methods and joinery at the corners offer clues to the decade of manufacture. Victorian and Edwardian frames differ in profile and ornamentation from mid-century twentieth-century designs.
