How do I date a fireplace poker?

Dating relies on stylistic clues in the handle design, such as Regency urn finials or Victorian decorative turning. Material choices, including the presence of burnished steel or gilt brass, also align with specific nineteenth-century design periods.

Were these pokers sold individually?

Historical evidence shows that most surviving pokers originate from matched sets of fire irons or companion sets. They were produced alongside tongs and shovels to outfit domestic hearths comprehensively.

What is polished steel?

Polished steel is metal ground and buffed to achieve a bright, reflective finish. This treatment was favoured in formal nineteenth-century rooms to catch the flickering light of the fire.

How do I care for antique steel?

Antique steel benefits from being kept dry and free from hearth moisture to prevent active oxidation. Light application of suitable conservation wax or oil helps maintain the surface finish without altering the metal.
