What is a small wood bedside table used for?

These small pieces provide a surface for lamps, books and personal items while offering concealed storage inside cabinets or drawers. Historically adapted from night stands and pot cupboards, they suit modern bedrooms where floor space is limited.

How do I identify an Edwardian bedside table?

Edwardian pieces often feature lighter mahogany timbers, sometimes enhanced with inlaid stringing or satinwood banding. Tapered legs and modest brass hardware are common characteristics of this period. Many examples from this era function as both side tables and small cupboards with internal shelving.

What woods are common in these tables?

Mahogany and oak appear most frequently across Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian examples. Walnut, burr yew, satin birch and cherry wood also feature in specific regional or period pieces. Secondary woods like deal or pine are typically used for internal drawer construction.

Are these tables sold as pairs?

Many listings comprise matched pairs of bedside cabinets or chests, particularly from the Edwardian period and the nineteen-thirties. Pairs are sought after for balancing bedroom layouts symmetrically. Single tables also appear frequently for standalone placement.
