How were these small round tables originally used?

These tables served diverse functions depending on their form, acting as bedside cabinets, cafe dining surfaces, or refined occasional stands for lamps and wine. Bistro variants filled pavement cafes, while bouillotte and gueridon versions furnished domestic drawing rooms and boudoirs for intimate gatherings.

How do I identify a Bouillotte table?

A Bouillotte table is distinguished by its circular marble top enclosed within a raised brass gallery rim designed to prevent items from sliding off. They commonly feature candleholders or candlesticks rising from the centre and typically stand on slender tapered legs.

Where should I place one in a modern home?

A small round table fits effortlessly beside a sofa, in a narrow hallway, or as a compact bedside cabinet. Marble-topped cafe versions also function effectively in conservatories or small breakfast nooks alongside garden seating.

How do I distinguish between 19th and 20th-century pieces?

Nineteenth-century examples often display heavier hand-carved oak elements and classic neoclassical proportions, reflecting traditional artisanal methods. Twentieth-century pieces from periods like 1910 to 1930 frequently utilise kingwood veneer, painted wood finishes, or industrial cast iron structures.
