Where should I place a small display cabinet?

These compact cabinets suit reception rooms, studies, or hallways where floor space is limited. Their glazed panels and delicate proportions prevent them from dominating smaller interiors. Position them away from direct sunlight to protect internal fabric linings and sensitive collectables from fading.

What is a bijouterie table used for?

These specialised tables function as waist-height display cases for small decorative items, medals, and jewellery. The glazed top allows inspection from above without opening the cabinet. Many examples include hinged lids and velvet-lined wells to cushion delicate artefacts.

How do I date a nineteenth-century display cabinet?

Dating relies on examining the timber construction methods, the style of the brass or ormolu mounts, and the cut of the glass. Revival pieces often borrow motifs from Louis XV design while employing later nineteenth-century manufacturing techniques. Secondary woods inside the carcase and the type of veneer backing offer further clues to the decade of manufacture.
