What is a small bedside stand?

A small bedside stand is a compact item of furniture intended for use next to a bed, providing a surface for lamps, books and personal objects. These pieces encompass open tables, tiered stands and enclosed cupboards with doors or drawers.

How were bedside stands used historically?

Historically, enclosed stands such as pot cupboards and night lockers kept chamber pots and personal belongings concealed beside the bed. Open tables and lamp stands provided convenient surfaces for illumination and reading material during the evening.

How do I identify a Georgian bedside stand?

Georgian bedside stands typically feature solid mahogany construction, restrained classical proportions and functional cupboard or drawer layouts. Details often include straightforward joinery, brass hardware and period-appropriate timber patination.

Are pairs of bedside stands common?

Pairs do appear among Edwardian, Georgian and Art Deco listings, often taking the form of matching lamp tables or cabinets. Finding matched pairs from earlier periods requires careful observation of timber grain, dimensions and structural details.
