How do I date an old mirror?

Dating relies on examining the frame style, the type of glass, and the manufacturing techniques used for the backing. Methods changed from nineteenth century hand-silvering to twentieth century industrial production. Signs of age include irregularities in the glass and foxing on the silvered mirror surface rather than modern uniformity.

What causes foxing on mirrors?

Foxing happens when moisture seeps behind the glass and reacts with the silver coating over many decades. This creates small dark spots and patination across the reflective surface. Collectors often value this natural ageing as proof of authenticity and historical depth.

Where should I hang a wall mirror?

Wall mirrors work best in spaces where they can reflect natural light and open up the room. Hallways, living rooms, and above mantelpieces are traditional locations. Ensure the wall fixings can support the weight of heavy wooden or glass-framed pieces.

How do I clean antique silvered glass?

Cleaning requires a soft, dry cloth and gentle handling to avoid damaging fragile frames and foxed glass. Harsh commercial cleaners can strip delicate silvered finishes. Keep moisture away from the edges where the glass meets the frame to prevent further oxidation.
