What is a silver desk glass?

These items are nineteenth and twentieth-century writing desk accessories that combine glass bodies with silver or plated mounts. They include magnifying glasses with glass lenses, cut glass inkwells with silver lids, and heavy glass desk lamps.

How do I identify Victorian silver desk items?

Victorian pieces often display Gothic styling, repousse decoration, or heavy oak stands paired with cut glass and sterling silver. Examination of the hallmarks on the silver mounts reveals the specific assay office and year of manufacture during the nineteenth century.

Were these pieces used for daily writing?

Writers and officials used these accessories daily for reading fine print, sealing letters with ink, and striking matches. Inkstands held liquid ink and stamps while magnifying glasses aided reading on large library desks.

How do I care for silver and glass?

Clean the glass components with standard glass cleaner while avoiding contact between liquid cleaners and the silver mounts. Polish the sterling silver or silver plate gently with a soft cloth to maintain the metal surface without disturbing any enamel work.
