What are silver capped scent bottles?

These items are small glass containers fitted with metal mounts designed to hold perfume on a dressing table. They combine decorative glassware with functional sterling silver caps. Most examples date from the Victorian and Edwardian eras, showcasing techniques like glass cutting and coloured glass production.

Owners kept them on dressing tables or carried them in travel vanity cases to hold liquid fragrance. The tight metal cap prevented the scent from evaporating. Inside the cap, a small cork stopper sealed the bottle tightly during transit or daily use.

How do I date these bottles?

Hallmarks stamped on the silver cap provide exact manufacturing years and assay office locations. Stylistic details in the glass cutting and colour also point to specific decades. Victorian and Edwardian pieces show distinct preferences for colours like cranberry, blue, and green overlay.

How do I clean the silver?

Gentle wiping with a soft cloth keeps the silver bright without disturbing the glass body. Care must be taken around historic glass surfaces and old cork stoppers. Harsh chemical dips should be avoided to protect the integrity of the antique metal and glass.
