How do I care for an iron and wood garden seat?

Keep wooden slats treated with suitable oils to prevent excessive drying from sun and rain. Iron frames benefit from gentle cleaning and touch-ups on exposed metal to halt corrosion. Position the seat on level stone or paving rather than directly on damp soil to protect the lower feet from moisture rot.

Are these garden benches suitable for year-round outdoor use?

Most historic garden seats are built from durable hardwoods like teak or robust cast iron designed to withstand the elements. However, severe winter frosts and prolonged dampness can test older timber joints and original paint. Storing pieces under cover during the coldest months helps preserve fragile surfaces and structural integrity.

How can I tell a Victorian garden seat from a later piece?

Victorian examples frequently display heavy cast iron framing with naturalistic motifs such as leaves, branches, or Gothic arches. Construction methods often include older bolt types and hand-finished details. Later twentieth-century pieces tend toward simpler lines, tubular metal construction, or standardised fittings.
